In Singapore, gender inequality has not been a pertinent issue that is discussed widely among the citizens. However, the ideal situation of gender inequality in actual fact has not been achieved in certain aspects. There are various aspects to be explored.
In this post, we shall look at the political aspect. A common phenomenon is observed in Singapore which is the fact that well-educated women are not taking up enough decision-making jobs. There are still a number of women who still feel that their role is in the home and so limit their own careers. In many traditional cultures, men are the heads of the household and that the family structure needs to prevail. This is indifferent in the Singapore culture.
There are quite a number of problems that have yet to be resolved.
1) Women participation in politics has much room for improvement, especially when compared to other developed countries where a minimum of 30% of the seats in the parliament is made up of women. Singapore has yet to achieve this target.
2) There is currently no woman taking up any Single-seat constituencies in Singapore. All the female Members of Parliament are dependent on the Group Representative Constituency (GRC).
3) There should be more female Parliamentarians taking up full Minister positions.
4) There is a general lack of gender-sensitivity among Parliamentarians, civil service officers and the private sector.
5) The National Agenda of the government is very focused on the family and men as heads of household.
These are some areas that we can explore and discuss in further depth. We hope that the general public can participate actively in the blog as this serves as a platform for all to voice out our comments on the issue of gender equality.
